Only about 11% of Malaysian road users wear rear seat safety belts.

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research says although the regulation has been in force, many road users do not even know the importance of using the safety belts.

It says if the driver and passengers in a vehicle are involved in a road accident, the risk of death can be reduced by 50% with airbags and this increases to 80% if used together with safety belts.
