Govt praised over launch of mobile Covid-19 vaccination trucks

Health experts have praised the government for implementing a Covid-19 vaccination mobile truck outreach pilot programme.

UM public health specialist Prof Dr Victor Hoe tells us any move to increase the coverage for Covid-19 vaccine is good for the country.

"The mobile vaccination trucks are really an innovative effort to bring the vaccine to the people instead of having them come to the vaccination centres. People living in rural areas, and people in old folks’ homes, nursing homes have difficulty traveling to the vaccine centre. The other group of people who will benefit from this effort are prison inmates and centres.” 

The mobile truck initiative is among four measures being implemented in the Federal Territories of KL, Putrajaya and Labuan to achieve herd immunity earlier by late August or early September.

Up to 300,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses could be administered per day by August.

However, the Minister in-charge of the Immunisation Programme says this will depend on supplies arriving as scheduled.

Khairy Jamaluddin says by ramping up the daily vaccination rate, he is confident that 80% of the population will be immunised by October.

Currently, over 10% of the population have been vaccinated, with more than 12.7 million people already registered for the vaccine.

Malaysia’s number of Covid-19 cases has remained below the 6,000 mark for a second consecutive day.

The Health Ministry reported 5,566 infections yesterday, with about 1,500 cases detected in Selangor alone.

Meanwhile, 76 more patients succumbed to the virus, raising the death toll to 3,536.
