Dec 16, 2021

msia detects second omicron case

One new COVID-19 case has been detected here in Malaysia linked to the new Omicron variant.

Khairy Jamaluddin says the patient is an eight-year-old Malaysian citizen who arrived from Nigeria earlier this month.

The Health Minister says the patient and her family members have been ordered to undergo mandatory quarantine.

This raises our total Omicron infections to two, both of which are imported cases.

Meanwhile, Khairy says there are 18 suspected Omicron cases that are now undergoing genomic sequencing.

The results are expected to be known by tomorrow.

The Health Minister says this also applies to all Sinovac recipients.

He says those who fail to take the jab will be stripped of their vaccination status on MySejahtera.

More people could soon be able to travel via the Land Vaccinated Travel Lane between Malaysia and Singapore.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry says authorities are considering raising the daily quota to 2,100.

However, it says this will depend on the current COVID-19 situation.

For now, only some 1,400 travellers are allowed via the Causeway per day.
