Daily cases could hit 30k, if Omicron wave not suppressed
Jan 07, 2022
Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 infections will reach 30,000 cases if measures are not taken to curb the Omicron wave.
The Health Minister says the decision to temporarily suspend the permission for umrah travel was one of the measures that had to be taken to prevent the spread of the variant.
Khairy Jamaluddin says if we do not do so, we will see cases surge to over 15,000 a day between now and February.
14% of the 122 Omicron infections detected in Malaysia, as of yesterday, involved people who were unvaccinated against Covid-19.
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin says, of this figure, 12 cases were umrah returnees.
Meanwhile, he says the health authorities are doing a thorough investigation as non-vaccinated people are barred from travelling or entering the country.
To date, the total number of Omicron cases in the country is at 245.
A special sitting of Parliament will be held on January 20 to discuss matters related to floods.
The PM says this is necessary to allow the government space to explain its plans and actions in handling the disaster that has so far taken the lives of more than 50 people.
