NADMA denies being caught off-guard by floods

The National Disaster Management Agency, NADMA has denied that it was caught off guard by the current floods in the east coast. 

It says agencies in Kelantan and Terengganu were well prepared, due to earlier warnings issued by weather officials. 

As at 6.30pm, over 21 thousand people were housed at relief centres in the two states. 

The death toll in Kelantan has risen to 3.

Malaysians evacuated from Ukraine

PM Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob says 9 Malaysians and two of their dependents have been safely evacuated from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, and are due to arrive here tomorrow.

This, following Russia's invasion of the country. 

Meanwhile a Malaysian student in Ukraine is currently safe at our embassy in Warsaw, Poland, and will return home soon.

The Higher Education Ministry adds that Malaysian students in Russia will continue to be at their respective universities, due to their distance from the crisis area.

Expert: Get rid of physical textbooks

The government should consider phasing out physical textbooks to deal with the problem of young children carrying heavy school bags. 

An education expert from UKM says instead, primary schools should adopt e-books, and put more emphasis on activity-based learning. 

He told the NST it's doable because of the scrapping of the UPSR, which means that primary school teachers are no longer tied to only teaching the contents of textbooks.

He adds that in the short-term, lockers could be installed in schools.
