Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace says she passed surrounded by members of the royal family, who had rushed to be by her side after doctors raised concerns about her health.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952, which makes her Britain’s longest-serving monarch. At 96, she had also been the world’s oldest monarch.
Her son Prince Charles has now ascended the throne and has taken the title King Charles III.
At 73…he is the oldest person to assume the British throne.
In his first official statement, the King said the death of his mother was a moment of huge sadness for him and his family.
According to the BBC…King Charles is expected to address the UK later today, while the ceremonial gathering for the official proclamation of the new King, is expected to be held tomorrow.
