Academic term to revert to January start date

The Education Ministry has provisionally agreed to have the school academic term begin in January again.

Minister Fadhlina Sidek says this is based on recommendations and feedback from parents as well as other relevant parties.

However, she adds that the school session will not revert back to January anytime soon, as several factors need to be considered first, including ensuring that the existing syllabus is not disrupted.

Separately, the Higher Education Ministry says the government will not allow any political parties to set up branches in tertiary education institutions, adding that there is a consensus on the matter from both sides of the political divide.

The MACC is free to investigate any government agency without interference.

The Home Ministry says this is part of the government’s commitment to weed out corruption at all levels.

This, after the Prime Minister yesterday proposed the setting up of an independent body to investigate complaints against enforcement agencies…including the police, MACC and Immigration authorities.

The government is stepping its fight against dengue, after cases rose by more than 400 percent this year.

The Deputy Prime Minister says part of the measures include re-activating meetings of the Cabinet committee to combat dengue.

He says as of earlier this week, more than 26 thousand dengue cases have been reported nationwide, compared to just eight thousand-plus cases in the same period last year.

The Transport Ministry has directed Prasarana to hold a special meeting, to discuss the recent technical issues involving the LRT and MRT services.

Minister Anthony Loke says the operator needs to look at the actual cause of the glitches, to prevent a recurrence.

Meanwhile, Rapid Rail says it is actively carrying out improvement works, including upgrading its signalling and safety systems.

It follows yet another disruption on the Kelana Jaya LRT line this week, due to a glitch in the Passenger Intrusion Emergency Stop system.
