The Education Ministry has been urged to solve the problem of teachers who are absent for long periods of time.

Lawyer Sharmila Sekaran says the recent landmark court case that ruled in favour of 3 students who sued their former English teacher for absenteeism, could get the ball rolling.

“We are very hopeful there will be change and we look forward to the ministry reaching out to Tiada Guru or any other organisations that work in these kind of these areas”, she said.

“Because we really need to change, we cannot continue like this, we need to do something for our children, our children’s children and the future of this country”

Sharmila, who represents education campaigners Tiada Guru, adds this decades-old problem of teachers not turning up in class affects not only the students but society at large, as our future generation lose out on a proper education.
