Monsoon Cost An Estimated RM1bil In Losses

The recent northeast monsoon caused an estimated 1 billion ringgit in losses.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says it includes damage sustained to infrastructure like roads and bridges.

Meanwhile, Zahid also expressed regret over the unfair distribution of aid in certain states after last year’s flooding.

He claims this was caused by registrations by different politically-affiliated groups, resulting in some victims not being listed as aid recipients.

The government will look into allowing refugees to work in certain employment sectors in the country.

The Home Ministry says its working together with the UNHCR to gather relevant data on the matter, including the actual number of refugees and their location.

It adds that based on requests, the agriculture and plantation sectors have been identified as potential employers.

Met Malaysia has placed 15 areas in Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Pahang and KL under a level-one heat alert.

These localities should expect daily temperatures of between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, The Star, citing data from the National Water Commission, says levels at several dams in Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Johor have already reached the warning level.
