The Education Ministry has identified several reasons why so many Year One students across the country are struggling with the essential skills of reading, writing, and basic arithmetic.

It explained that the issue can be attributed to learning loss during the COVID19 pandemic, poverty, and the needs of special children.

This, after the ministry revealed that 122 thousand Year One pupils nationwide are affected.

However, it assured that the number will improve once students master these basic skills through government intervention.

The flood situation across five states continues to worsen.  

According to the Social Welfare Department's portal, the number of evacuees in Johor has risen past the 600 mark. 

The number of victims in Kedah is also up to over 450 while there are 300 displaced in Perak.  

Meanwhile, nearly 180 people have been evacuated in Selangor while just over 20 are in Melaka.

Nearly 30 areas in KL have been hit by water disruptions due to a burst pipe, including Brickfields, Bukit Damansara, and the KL City Center.  

Air Selangor says repair works are underway and are expected to be completed by 1AM tomorrow.

The Johor MB has assured that he'll do his best to ensure that the state’s decision to revert its off days to Saturday and Sunday will not interrupt Friday prayers for Muslims.

He says appropriate working hours will be drafted out to ensure ample time for prayers.

And, the LEKAS highway will be closed off to traffic from 5PM this Saturday to 4AM the following morning, to make way for a cycling race.
