Goodbye Single Use-Plastic Bags?

Nov 07, 2024

goodbye single use-plastic bags?

Say goodbye to single-use plastic bags.

The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry says it's looking into possibly banning them by 2026.

It adds that the move would be in line with several states that have already implemented the ban.

This includes Negeri Sembilan, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The ministry also revealed that it's received positive feedback from state governments regarding the move.

Meanwhile, its minister assured that the government will continue to work with all

stakeholders including industry players and NGOs to raise public awareness on single-use plastics.

The usage of power sockets has been banned from express buses.

However, the Transport Ministry assured that the ban is only temporary.

This, following the death of a teenager who died from electrocution while charging his mobile phone on board a bus in Penang.

---

In a related development, the ministry says it'll review the SOPs regarding power sockets usage on buses.

It adds that currently, no such standard exists for such vehicles.

The ministry also assured that there is no need to panic because airplanes, trains, and electric trains have their own socket standard.

---

The government has no plans to block access to social media platforms that have not applied for the new licensing requirement.

The Communications Ministry says blocking access will be a "last resort" measure.

The licensing requirement takes effect on January 1st, next year
