A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast Russia's far-east this morning. 

Reports say several injuries and property damage were reported there.  

There there also initial reports of tsunami waves of up to 4m in the Kamchatka province. 

The quake also triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean.  

Japan ordered residents to evacuate several coastal regions this morning, and reports say that a first wave of 30 cm had struck northern Hokkaido.  

The Japanese govt says so far there have been no reports of casualties or damage.  

Meanwhile, the US issued tsunami warnings for Hawaii and Alaska, as well as west coast states including California.  

The Philippines issued its own warning for its Pacific areas, saying they could experience waves of less than 1m.  

However, there are no warnings for Australia and New Zealand.  

Meanwhile MetMalaysia says there is NO tsunami threat to Malaysia.  

According to reports, this morning's Kamchatka quake was the strongest since 2011, when a 9.0 magnitude superquake struck northeastern Japan.  

It's also the 6th most-powerful earthquake in recorded history.

The government has decided to scrap plans to impose its planned luxury goods tax.  

PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister, says it's because such products are already covered under the expanded SST.  

Under the expansion, a 5-10% tax is imposed on luxury and selected goods.

A post-mortem says the six-year-old boy who was found dead in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan was strangled to death, likely by a cable tie.   

Cops add they have yet to confirm a motive for the boy's death, but initial investigations suggest that his parents may have had marital problems.
