Aug 12, 2025

kpm to hold engagement sessions on bullying

The Education Ministry has agreed to hold engagement sessions with student groups and civil society members, to strengthen SOPs against school bullying.

Its minister adds that the ministry is open to all feedback and suggestions to tackle the menace.

The engagement sessions was one of the demands listed in a memorandum submitted to the ministry, by a group of activists following the death of Zara Qairina, who is believed to be a bullying victim.

Among other things, the memorandum also called for comprehensive reforms of the national education system, especially with regards to bullying.

It also called for mandatory training for teachers, school administrators, and wardens over the handling of bullying cases.

Also, the Education Ministry has warned that tough legal action will be handed teachers who are caught smoking or vaping within school premises.

It says under the Tobacco Control law, those caught doing so face a maximum fine of RM10,000 or up to two years in prison.

31 bullying cases were reported at public universities over the past 11 years.

The Higher Education Ministry says they involved cases of physical bullying AND cyberbullying.

Its minister told the Dewan Rakyat, there is a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying, adding that universities have the discretion to handle such cases on their own.

The ministry also pointed out that serious cases or those that are criminal in nature are immediately referred to the authorities, such as the police.

Cops say are still trying to locate 100 other missing chips, worth RM1 million.

Earlier reports said that the chips were stolen by a former casino employee who is still at large.
