The Health Ministry is keeping a close eye on the new XFG Covid-19 variant that has been detected in the country.

It explained that although the transmission rate is higher, it does not lead to more severe symptoms in patients.

It further adds that we’ve had no major outbreaks so far…only isolated cases with common symptoms like respiratory distress.

However, those who do display symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Some 330 drowning incidents involving nearly 500 victims have been reported nationwide between 2020 and the middle of last year.

The Maritime Enforcement Agency says of this figure, 216 individuals lost their lives…176 were rescued, while just over a hundred are still listed as missing.

It also noted that most of the fatal drowning cases involved victims who were not wearing life jackets while participating in water activities.

The Armed Forces is on standby to deploy its personnel and assets in the event of major flooding during the monsoon season.

It says its already performed drills and simulation exercises as part of preparations, and will be keeping a close eye on flood-prone locations.

Meanwhile, according to the Social Welfare Department’s portal, there are currently around 580 flood evacuees in Sabah…compared to over a thousand last night.

And, PTPTN is offering loan advance payments to over 27 thousand bachelor’s degree students entering public universities and polytechnics this October.

Under the initiative, eligible students will receive 1,500 ringgit to help with their initial preparations for entering tertiary institutions.
