Floods Worsen In Three States

The number of flood evacuees across three states has surged past the 4,500 mark.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s portal….Perak is the worst-affected with over 2,600 victims.

The number of those at flood relief centers in Kedah stands at more than a thousand.

While Penang continues to see an increase in evacuees…with more than 800 currently forced out of their homes.

This, as the Met Department issued a yellow-level alert for continuous rain in Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak until at least tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry says its working with authorities like the National Disaster Management Agency and the Met Department, to ensure the upcoming SPM proceeds smoothly in flood-hit states.

Its also advising candidates who are affected by flooding to contact their schools or the state education department, so that the necessary assistance can be provided for them to sit for the exam.

Police will be stepping up patrols around schools and will be working closely with the Education Ministry to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

The Inspector General of Police says patrol units will even enter school compounds if necessary to observe and assess security conditions.

This, following a government directive for security to be improved in schools nationwide, in the wake of recent criminal cases involving students.

Separately, there will be no changes to existing guidelines regarding the serving of alcohol at events held in school halls.

Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil says the Education Ministry will be issuing further clarification on the matter.

Police say underaged boys were among 31 people arrested in a nationwide crackdown on child sexual abuse material.

The latest operation involving 37 raids around the country also saw over 800 thousand files containing such material seized by the authorities.
