govt ready for next wave of flooding

The government is on alert for the possibility of a second or even third wave of flooding.

The National Disaster Management Agency says preparations have already been made at the national, state and district levels…and is confident that coordination will be better this year.

Its also made arrangements for financial assistance to be paid out to flood victims as soon as possible, to help them replace their damaged household appliances.

Employers are being urged not to use the 1,700 ringgit minimum wage as a benchmark to set starting salaries for fresh graduates.

The Human Resources Ministry clarified that the minimum wage is merely a safety net for the most basic and low-skilled jobs.

It also warned that setting starting salaries too low will have a knock-on effect on middle and top income earners…and will hamper efforts to increase wages across the board.

The de-facto Law Minister says the new Anti-Bullying Bill, which was tabled for first reading in parliament yesterday, is expected to be debated tomorrow.

Among others, the bill will give educational institutions autonomy to use their internal committees as a first line of prevention, detection, management and reporting of bullying cases.

Singapore’s Health Ministry has denied allegations that its trying to recruit doctors and nurses from Malaysia…clarifying that the republic relies predominantly on its own medical workforce.

Separately, our Health Ministry says the stock if influenza vaccines is expected to be sufficient for Malaysia’s needs until February…with efforts also being taken to ensure prices are stable.

Hong Kong officials say the netting used to cover the scaffolding around the apartment buildings that caught fire last week had failed to meet fire-resistance standards…and may have further accelerated the blaze that killed over 150 people.
