Malaysia Needs More Judges

Jan 13, 2026

malaysia needs more judges

Court cases in Malaysia are on the rise.

The Chief Justice says the number of cases has surged by up to 60% in the past few years...adding that we do not have enough judges to deal with the growing caseload.

As such, a committee will carry out an extensive study on the matter, with an interim report expected this June.

The Chief Justice adds that we can learn from other countries.

For example, Malaysia has a ratio of one superior court judge for nearly 240 thousand people, while in Canada, there is approximately one judge for every 47 thousand.

The Higher Education Ministry has instructed a private university in Bukit Damansara to immediately conduct thorough safety inspections.

This, in the wake of an explosion there yesterday during the maintenance of an air conditioning system that killed one man and injured nine others.

The ministry says the inspection must cover all campus facilities, and that the university must ensure affected areas are verified safe by the authorities before being re-opened.

Meanwhile, welfare support – including medical and psychosocial services – must be provided to all victims of the blast.

The Defense Ministry is stepping up efforts to eradicate corruption and abuse of power in the national defense sector.

As such, it will carry out a major overhaul of its Anti-Corruption Plan this year.

Meanwhile, all tender and procurement processes will also be reviewed and improved in line with best practices.

Earlier this month, a former Army Chief was remanded as part of the MACC's investigations into corruption.

The MCMC is considering taking legal action against X regarding its AI tool Grok.

The Communications Ministry says a detailed statement over the matter will be released soon.

Earlier, the commission temporarily restricted access to the AI chatbot after it was misused to generate non-consensual sexual images involving women and minors.

The MCMC stressed that Grok will remain blocked until the social media platform can implement protective safeguards.
