The Communication and Multimedia Ministry wants to make it compulsory for those looking to buy prepaid sim cards to register their fingerprints.

The move is to prevent the abuse of prepaid sim cards, which have been found to be used in several crime cases.

This follows an earlier media report, saying many telco agents are selling prepaid SIM cards without asking to see an identity card.
