Hannah Yeoh: We need new childcare approach for young parents

Jul 27, 2018

The Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister is a staunch supporter of longer paternity leave for fathers.

Hannah Yeoh told the Malay Mail, new dads should be given at least two-weeks' paternity leave, so that a father can support the mum as both adjust to their new life.

However, she admits that it would be tough to implement for now, due to opposition from private sector employers.

Currently, most companies in Malaysia give only three days of paternity leave.

In contrast, Singapore and the UK are among the countries that grant at least two weeks of paternity leave.

Meanwhile in Sweden, dads also get 90 days!

The reason for the long leave, is to promote bonding between the father and the newborn child.
