Tolls to stay for now

May 28, 2019

The tolls rates are here to stay for now.

PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad said it would cost the government too much money to abolish tolls...even on just one highway.

He adds that the money is better spent on other things, like reducing the country's massive debts.

Tun M was responding to former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, who had earlier said that the government can afford to reduce tolls by 25%.

Push for skills training

Human Resources Minister M. Kula Segaran says there are two main reasons why employers are reluctant to send employees for training.

The first is the concern that trained workers will demand higher pay, while the second is the fear that workers will jump ship after being trained.

Kula, however, believes it is a worker's right to improve themselves.

That is why the ministry is working to protect the employee's right to training, including by pushing training centres and institutions to operate after working hours, to allow more workers to attend classes.

In other developments...

The Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia prefers a monthly price setting mechanism, instead of weekly, when the new fuel subsidy plan comes into place.

The government is planning to implement a targeted RON 95 petrol subsidy soon.

And, the man who rammed his car into three runners at the Klang City International Marathon two years ago, has been sentenced to four years in jail.

Runner Evelyn Ang was killed in the incident, while two others were injured.
