Still unclear if coronavirus can spread through food

Apr 06, 2020

There is no indication that Covid-19 can spread through food.

Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this, when asked to comment on the case of a staff member of an eatery in Johor who had tested positive for the virus:

"We have not heared that the virus was spread by the food, but more importantly, if one of the workers tests positive, then we'll have to screen, and basically those who were in close contact of the restaurant.”

In a related development, Dr Noor Hisham says the ministry is awaiting guidelines from the World Health Organisation on whether it should be compulsory for EVERYONE to wear masks when outdoors.

For now, he says the government has no objections if people want to wear masks as a precaution.

This came as another 179 new Covid-19 infections were reported yesterday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 3,662.

Four more fatalities were also reported, meaning 61 people in the country have now succumbed to the coronavirus.

Johor looking to bring Malaysians in Singapore back in batches at least

Johor is seeking Singapore’s assistance to manage the return of Malaysians from the republic.

This, following reports that as many as 45,000 Malaysians there are eager to return, after the island state imposed stricter measures to contain the coronavirus.

The Johor government is proposing that Singapore allow our nationals to return in stages, possibly in batches of one to two thousand at a time.
