Bukit Aman to use existing laws for SOSMA cases

The IGP says Bukit Aman will use existing laws including the Criminal Procedure Code for cases under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

He says after July 31st, cops will no longer enforce the SOSMA provision which allows authorities to detain suspects for up to 28 days without trial.

He adds that suspects arrested under SOSMA are usually for complex crimes, including those involving acts of terrorism, threats to national security, and human trafficking.

This comes after the motion to extend the SOSMA provision for another 5 years was defeated in Parliament yesterday.

The Dewan Rakyat speaker says the motion did not pass after 84 MPs voted in favour of the extension, while 86 MPs voted against it.

50 MPs were absent.

Anti-Hopping Bill expected to be tabled soon

The Anti Hopping Bill is expected to be tabled in a special Dewan Rakyat sitting soon.

The DAP secretary general says the Prime Minister will call for the sitting during Ramadan at the earliest.

Anthony Loke also reiterated his coalition’s stance to maintain the Memorandum of Understanding between Pakatan Harapan and the government, so long as Putrajaya fulfils its promise to bring the Bill to Parliament.

Earlier, the de-facto Law Minister said the tabling of the bill was postponed, because more input was needed from stakeholders.

Parents urged to cancel booster appointments for teens

Booster dose recipients who received an appointment for another booster shot have been urged to cancel the booking.

The Health Ministry also urged parents who made a booster appointment for adolescents to call off the appointment.

It explained that there were some technical issues in MySejahtera, where the system issued appointments to those aged 17 and below.

As per current policy, boosters are only given to adult recipients aged 18 and above.
