SIRIM approval for non-medical face masks postponed to 2023

Apr 08, 2022

sirim approval for non-medical face masks postponed to 2023

The enforcement of the gazetted Trade Descriptions Act, in which non-medical face masks must be approved by SIRIM, has been postponed to January, instead of July this year.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister says this follows feedback on the matter, with many being concerned of a price hike for such masks.

However, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi says consumers need not worry, because manufacturers and importers have been warned NOT to use the gazettement to hike up their prices...

He adds that consumers will not be fined for wearing non-medical face masks that are not SIRIM approved.

He says action will only be taken against manufacturers and importers who fail to meet set standards.

The Anti Hopping Bill will be tabled at another special parliamentary sitting, with the date to be announced by the Prime Minister.

The de facto Law Minister says however, the special sitting scheduled for Monday and Tuesday will continue as planned, to table and debate the constitutional amendments.

Meanwhile, the Communications and Multimedia Minister says the bill requires an in-depth study before being tabled at Parliament.

He says it is important to do so, to avoid any problems regarding party-hopping in the future.
