Govt takes several measures to over RON95 shortage
May 10, 2022
The government has taken short term measures to overcome a shortage of RON95 petrol in several areas recently.
The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry says it is working with the Transport Ministry to speed up the process of releasing oil tankers delivering the fuel, among other measures.
It noted that among the reasons for the shortage include delays by tankers in delivering fuel to terminals during the Hari Raya holidays, as well as a spike in the number of motorists on the road.
The Ministry adds that not all petrol stations are facing the problem, and suggested motorists switch to other brands for the time being.
Additional RM15mil approved for COVID-19 genomic surveillance project
An additional RM15 million has been approved for the third phase of the COVID-19 genomic surveillance project.
The government says the project is crucial to detect and monitor variants in Malaysia, especially variants of concern such as Delta and Omicron.
The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry says Malaysia has conducted genomic sequencing on over 15,000 samples since September.
Nearly half of the samples were identified as the Delta variant, while some 40% of them were Omicron.
Malaysians urged to get their eyes checked regularly
Malaysians have been urged to get their eyes checked regularly as most eye-related diseases can become untreatable if action is not taken swiftly.
Experts say that according to the National Eye Survey Malaysia in 2018, 15 thousand people examined for blindness, with nearly 60 percent of them being diagnosed with untreated cataracts.
They say this could have been prevented if they were detected earlier.
They also believe that the significant rise in various vision-related issues is linked to an
increase of screen time amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
