Anti-hopping bill could be enforced first week September

The bill to ban party hopping will be tabled for the first reading in the Dewan Negara on August 9th.

The de facto Law Minister adds that he hopes the bill can be enforced in the first week of September, as scheduled.

History was made yesterday, after MPs passed the anti-party hopping bill in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to the bill, MPs will lose their seats if they switch to another party of become independent.

They can, however, keep their seats if they were sacked from their parties.

Prioritise public health over right to smoke

Malaysians have been advised to support the Health Ministry in protecting the younger generation, through the Tobacco and Smoking Control Bill.

The Health Director General says priority should be given to public health issues, over the ‘fundamental right’ to smoke.

The proposed bill aims to ban the smoking and possession of all tobacco related products for those born after 2007.

The generational end game was tabled in Dewan Rakyat earlier this week.

Bersih: Still room for improvement for anti-hopping bill

Bersih has congratulated Putrajaya and the opposition on the passing of the bill to ban party hopping, saying it is a step forward in democracy.

However, it believes there is still room for improvement.

It says two issues need to be addressed including the issue of parties who change coalitions after an election.

It is also concerned that lawmakers who go against their parties may wait to be sacked in order to keep their seats.

The Prime Minister earlier said that MPs will lose their seats if they switch to another party or become independent.
