We may not have a general election this year

Sep 22, 2022

we may not have a general election this year

The Cabinet does not appear to be in favour of holding the general election during the monsoon season.

The Rural Development Minister, who was at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, says his colleagues were more focused on preparations for the year-end flooding.

Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid says they’re all aware of the threat posed by the floods, adding that the Prime Minister is also taking the Met Department’s advice into consideration.

-

Meanwhile, the Health Minister also says its not a good idea to hold GE15 amid the flooding.

Khairy Jamaluddin explained, there are health and logistics issues to consider, including the use of schools as flood relief centers.

Schools are also typically used as voting centres during elections.

-

In a related development, residents in flood-prone areas will be given flood evacuation simulation training.

The Fire Department says this is part of the pro-active measures being taken to ensure that everyone is well-prepared for the year-end flooding.

The Department adds that it also has about 1,800 land, water and air assets currently on standby.

-

The Finance Minister has reiterated that the ringgit will not be pegged to the US dollar, amid the continued weakening of the local currency.

He says this is because we are currently NOT in a currency or financial crisis like back in 1997.

-

And, the Foreign Ministry is intensifying efforts to rescue Malaysians who’ve fallen victim to job scams overseas.

This includes the setting up of a multi-agency special committee to bring our nationals home.
