Wan Saiful charged in court
Feb 21, 2023
Bersatu information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan has been charged at the KL Session’s Court, over the Jana Wibawa program.
The Tasek Gelugor MP claimed trial, and pleaded not guilty to accepting bribes of nearly seven million ringgit in relation to the initiative.
He was also charged with soliciting an unspecified amount for a road project worth 232 million ringgit.
Wan Saiful had been arrested, after giving his statement to the MACC last night.
Also charged today, was businessman and Bersatu deputy division chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad.
He’s facing two charges of soliciting and accepting bribes related to the same Jana Wibawa program.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has already had his statement recorded as part of the same investigation.
The Commission has also called in former Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
The Jana Wibawa program was set up under the Muhyiddin administration, to help Bumiputera contractors affected by the Covid pandemic.
However, the MACC stepped in, amid allegations that some of the contractors had allegedly deposited a total of 300 million ringgit into the Bersatu party account.
The accounts have since been frozen as part of the investigation.
For the record, this is the first court action to be taken against individuals connected to the previous government of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
It is also the first high-profile case initiated by the MACC, since the change of government.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin has since said that Bersatu is a victim of selective prosecution, to weaken Perikatan Nasional ahead of the upcoming state elections.
