The Education Ministry will be conducting a detailed study into the reasons behind last year’s SPM no-shows.

It says the findings will be shared, including the proposed intervention methods to overcome the problem.

It follows a recent report that nearly 15 thousand candidates who registered for last year’s SPM, did not sit for the exam.

-

The Education Ministry remains committed to making it compulsory for students to stay in school until Form Five.

Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying says the plan to make it 11 years of mandatory schooling, is to ensure that students receive sufficient education.

She adds that this is part of new policies that will be rolled out in the next few years, as part of wider intervention efforts to address the issue of dropouts.

-

More healthcare personnel need to be trained, to address the lack of specialists in the country.

The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia says the current ratio is 3.88 specialists for every 10 thousand Malaysians…which is far below the average ratio of 14 specialists for every 10 thousand people by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

It adds that the matter needs to be addressed urgently as an ageing population will lead to more cases of non-communicable diseases.

-

A 15-year-old student in Pekan, Pahang had to be hospitalized, after suffering from heat exhaustion during a run.

Doctors are reminding the public to limit outdoor activities, and to take proper precautions amid the current hot weather.

-

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia says Bentong, Pahang is the only area nationwide under a level-one heat alert…which is when daily temperatures reach 35-37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

-

The Civil Aviation Authority says its already identified the private helicopter that recently landed in a field in Shah Alam, supposedly to drop off a school student.

The agency adds that investigations are ongoing to determine if there was any wrongdoing.
