88 Heat-Related Illnesses So Far

May 29, 2024

88 heat-related illnesses so far

Another four cases of heat-related illnesses were reported nationwide last week.

According to the National Disaster Management Agency, this raises the total number of cases so far to 88.

However, there were no new fatalities, leaving the death toll steady at three.

NADMA adds that 70% of total cases involved heat exhaustion, followed by heat stroke and heat cramps.

There are renewed calls for the government to ban dummy car seat buckles, due to the serious safety risks involved.

Consumer and safety groups told the Malay Mail, it’s because they are still being sold openly, both online and in physical shops.

These dummy buckles disable the alarm that sounds whenever a driver or passengers are not wearing seatbelts.

This puts them at a higher risk of serious injury or death if their car is involved in a crash.

Experts also warned that using dummy buckles could also cause the airbag system to malfunction.

Meanwhile, traffic police say 1,607 road crashes were reported nationwide yesterday, resulting in 8 deaths.

This means that nearly 136 thousand crashes have been reported nationwide since PDRM started releasing daily accident figures in mid-March.

Meanwhile on average, around 15 people lose their lives in fatal crashes every day.

And MCMC is warning people to be wary of calls from individuals claiming to be its officers.

The commission issued the warning, amid a spike in reports of such scam calls over the past week.
