agc loses bid to block royal addendum review

The Federal Court has rejected the AG’s Chambers final appeal to stop Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s judicial review of a royal addendum allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

Today’s ruling now clears the way for the former Prime Minister to proceed with his challenge in the High Court to enforce the addendum.

Datuk Seri Najib was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison for misappropriation of funds from SRC International, although this was later reduced to six years by the pardons board.

He has since completed three years of the reduced term.

The government is stepping up efforts to improve the justice system.

As such, the Criminal Law Reform Committee has identified several short-term reforms to deliver immediate benefits to the public, including abolishing caning as a punishment.

Others include giving judges greater discretion in sentencing and improving the remand process.

Drug rehabilitation centers will soon be revamped to include TVET in their education modules.

The DPM says doing so will help these centers break away from conventional modules to better equip clients with valuable skills.

This, as part of efforts to ease their reintegration into society.

The army will review its SOPs for training, including those for the Reserve Officers' Training Unit.

This includes improving the health screening process to make it more thorough.

The Army chief explained that it's because the program involves high-risk training including the use of live ammunition.

And the total number of fatalities from malnutrition amid the food supply crisis in the Gaza Strip has risen to almost 230, with nearly half of the victims being children.

The Gaza Health Ministry adds that it's recorded five deaths from starvation in the past 24 hours alone....as Israel continues to block aid from entering the region.
