Starting 2027…those applying for personal loans exceeding 100 thousand ringgit will need to complete a financial education module.

This is according to new requirements set by Bank Negara…which was announced by the central bank today.

The modules will be conducted either by the banks themselves or by the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency or AKPK.

It is aimed at promoting responsible borrowing by consumers, and to prevent unsustainable household debt.

Women’s participation in the country’s labour force has now reached 56 percent.

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry says its hoping to increase this to 60 percent by 2030.

In a related development, the Statistics Department says Malaysia’s life expectancy at birth has risen this year, to an average of 75.3 years.

The lorry in the fatal Bukit Kajang toll plaza crash will undergo an inspection by the Chemistry Department and Puspakom tomorrow, following claims that the vehicle had experienced brake failure.

Elsewhere…at least 91 students remain trapped under rubble, two days after a school building collapsed in East Java, Indonesia while undergoing unauthorized expansion.

The number has been revised upwards from 38 by the country’s Disaster Management Agency.

Search and rescue teams have detected signs of life, but have been unable to use heavy machinery for fear of causing the remaining structure to collapse.

So far three people have been confirmed dead, while nearly a hundred others were injured.

Separately, the province of Cebu as well as other surrounding towns and cities have declared a state of calamity, after at least 26 people were killed when a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines.
