Active COVID-19 infections now at 172

Aug 12, 2020

11 new COVID-19 cases were reported today, including three local transmissions.

The Health Ministry says none of the local cases involved existing clusters.

Meanwhile the number of active infections is now at 172,  and the death toll remains at 125.

Banks can afford extended moratorium

Banks do have enough capital to carry out the targeted loan moratorium which is set to end in December.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri told Parliament that so far, RM66 billion out of the RM100 billion allocation under the economic stimulus package has been used by banks for the moratorium.

He adds that every moratorium extension decision was regulated by Bank Negara, with input from banks.

Last month, the PM announced a targeted bank loan moratorium for those who lost their jobs or suffered pay cuts due to COVID-19.

Nationwide snap election would cost about RM1.2 billion

It would cost the government around RM1.2 billion ringgit to hold a nationwide snap election.

This is more than double the RM500 million that was spent on the 14th General Election.

The Law Minister says the higher cost is because they would need to implement measures to prevent COVID-19.
