Higher fines for water polluters soon

Sep 06, 2020

The Selangor state government is pushing to double the fine for water polluters to one million ringgit.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari says the state has already agreed to amend the relevant laws to achieve this, and to deter future offenders.

Meanwhile, those responsible for the river pollution that has left millions of consumers in Selangor without water, will be prosecuted next week.

The Environment and Water Ministry says it will not compromise on the matter, and is already working on amending existing laws to push for heavier penalties for future offenders.

This comes amid yet another incident of massive water cuts in the Klang Valley, as a result of river pollution by a nearby factory.

Meanwhile, Air Selangor says water supply has been restored to more than 32 percent of the overall affected areas, as early this morning.

The rest of the areas will have their supply restored in stages over the next two days.

Covid-19 update

Six new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, two of which were local transmissions.

It brings the number of active cases in the country to 150.

Yesterday also saw 21 recoveries, with no new fatalities.

Coronavirus protests down under

Dozens of people have been arrested in Australia, as thousands took the streets in several major cities to protest the government's coronavirus restrictions.

The demonstrations were largely driven by fringe online groups promoting virus-related and anti-vaccination conspiracy theories.
