50 percent of some 960 tahfiz schools nationwide are not safe.

The Fire and Rescue Department says checks conducted last month showed the most common offence was not having fire safety equipment.

Another problem was the centres did not have enough exits or fire escapes.

The nationwide crackdown follows a deadly arson attack at a Keramat tahfiz school last month that killed 23 people.
