MET Department dismisses tsunami rumours

Nov 18, 2017

The MET Department has dismissed claims by an Indian professor, who predicted that a massive earthquake and tsunami will hit the Indian Ocean before the end of the year.

It says there is no scientific proof to back the claims.

The Department's Climate and Weather Director-General Alui Bahari also assured an alert system is already in place, to issue a warning in the event of a tsunami.

In the event of a tsunami, the tsunami service provider will inform all countries bordering the Indian ocean about the earthquake and tsunami. It will also inform when the tsunami is likely to hit the country.

Meanwhile, he urged the public to verify reports by checking official sources for accurate information by referring to the department’s official website and the websites of international agencies.
