News Wrap-up: Swimming to be introduced in schools, no electricity hike and Selangor could see more drones in the sky

Oct 21, 2018

Swimming will be introduced as a co--curricular activity in school next year to curb drowning incidents.

The programme will be introduced to schools located near public swimming pools to start off with.

In related news, a 6-year-old boy drowned in a river in Terengganu while out with his friends.

No Electricity Tariff Hike

The government does not believe in increasing the electricity tariff so that people will use less and become more energy efficient.

Minister Yeo Bee Yin says despite such demands by industry players, the government is aware raising electricity tariffs will cause a lot of financial difficulties for Malaysians.

The government is also not considering a carbon tax.

Bukit Kukus Landslide

The Penang govt wants more power to monitor development activities, especially at hill slopes.

This comes after a landslide at a construction site in Bukit Kukus on Friday killed 4 people.

5 others are still missing, but the police believe 2 of them have run away because they don't have work permits.

Vapers, Listen Up

The Health Ministry is coming up with a new law to control tobacco, vaping and shisha activities.

This is part of the govt's attempt to regulate vape products that don't contain nicotine.

More Drones in The Sky

Selangor is considering using drones to find potholes and other infrastructure that needs maintenance.

Artificial Intelligence will also be used to find trees that are at risk of collapsing during thunderstorms.
