Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th US president, becoming the oldest person ever to enter office at the age of 78.
Following months of bitter resistance from Donald Trump to the outcome of the November presidential election, new President Biden at the inauguration ceremony says democracy has prevailed.
"This is America’s day, this is democracy’s day. The day of history and hope. America has risen to the challenge. Today we celebrate the triumph not of a candidate but of a cause, the cause of democracy. The people, the will of the people has been heard.”
Biden has pledged to unite the country and called on Americans to end the uncivil war that has fractured the nation.
At his inaugural address, Biden repeatedly stressed the need for unity, amid a devastating pandemic and the threat of domestic terrorism.
"The answer is not to turn inward, to retreat into competing factions, distrusting those who don't look like you or worship the way you do, or don't get their news from the same sources you do,"We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this .”
