Euro 2020 pushed back a whole year

Mar 18, 2020

It’s official. Euro 2020 has been postponed by a whole year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

UEFA made the decision yesterday in an emergency meeting with stakeholders, as more major sporting events continue to be affected by the crisis.

The tournament, which was scheduled to take place from June 12th, will now run from June 11th 2021.

In delaying Euro 2020, UEFA says it wants to avoid "placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services" of its 12 host countries, as well as helping allow European leagues that have been suspended, to now be completed.

Elsewhere, this year's Copa America, due to take place at the same time, has also been postponed till next year.

Meanwhile, FIFA’s newly-expanded Club World Cup, originally scheduled to take place in China in June 2021, will be postponed to a new date when "there is more clarity on the situation".

IOC decides to go on with Tokyo 2020

The IOC has insisted it’s fully committed to Tokyo 2020, and with more than four months to go before the Games, it says there is no need for any drastic decisions at this stage.

It has also encouraged all athletes to continue to prepare for the Games as best they can, assuring that it will keep everyone updated on the latest coronavirus developments.

The IOC has confidence that the many measures being taken by many authorities around the world will help contain the situation.

The news comes after Japan’s PM said he wants to hold the Olympics and Paralympics perfectly, as proof that the human race will conquer the coronavirus.

Roland-Garros moved to September

The French Tennis Open is the latest major sporting event to be affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Roland-Garros was due to be played from May 24th, but will instead take place from September 20th.

This means the clay-court tournament will begin just one week after the completion of the US Open.
