Spain and England Set For Euro 2024 Showdown
Jul 11, 2024
We’re finally down to the last two teams at Euro 2024!
After a long and arduous journey in the group and knockout stages, it is Spain and England who remain in contention to be crowned European champions.
Road to the final
The Spaniards had dominated the group and knockout stage, cementing their status as tournament favourites.
Their 2-1 victory over powerhouse France in the semis also earned them the honour of becoming the first team ever to win six successive games in a single Euro’s tournament.
England, on the other hand had a more difficult passage. They only managed one win in the group stage and needed penalties to get past Switzerland in the quarters.
But they finally appeared to get their act together in the semis, putting on a calm and composed display to beat The Netherlands 2-1.
Clash of the rising stars
Spain have arguably the best player of the tournament in Lamine Yamal. One only needs to look at his stunning strike against France to understand the hype surrounding this 16-year-old.
He’s already the youngest ever Euro’s goalscorer, and the youngest ever player to appear and score for Spain.
At the opposite end, there’s England’s Jude Bellingham – widely regarded as one of the best English players of his generation.
The 21-year-old is at the heart of most of the Three Lions’ attacking maneuvers, and he will pose a strong challenge to the Spaniard’s solid defence.
Head to head
Historically, England lead Spain 14-10 in terms of overall head-to-head matchups, with only three games ending in draws.
In the Euro’s specifically, it is also the Three Lions who hold the advantage, beating the Spaniards on their previous two matchups in 1980 and 1996.
England also won the most recent meeting between the two sides in the 2018 Nations League.
Records to be broken
Victory for Spain in the final will make them the first team to win the Euro’s four times, having previously lifted the trophy in 1964, 2008 and 2012.
A win for England, meanwhile, would give them their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.
Incidentally, this is also the first time that England are contesting a major final on foreign soil.
