Kat (Katrina Cheng Binti Roshan) is a 17- year - old singer-songwriter living in Kuala Lumpur who released her first solo single ‘YOU’ on 28th May 2020. Born on 8th September 2003 in Kuala Lumpur, she is of mixed parentage with a Malay father and Chinese mother.

Musically inclined since young, she was discovered to have perfect pitch by her violin teacher. She started piano lessons at age 5 with her mother's school mate Serena Yee, and later, picked up the guitar from her former Maths teacher in school, Stephen Kimber (Steve) who has been her mentor and now manager since she developed her musical talent and early career.

She was a regular performer on stage with Steve and represented the school in music competitions where her confidence in her vocal talents flourished.

From a young age, Kat was always busy composing her own music. By a chance encounter at KLCC with her father's friend who had been in the music industry, she was introduced to Chossy Pratama, an esteemed music producer and composer from Jakarta. This culminated in Kat recording and releasing his song, ‘Rasa’, in Indonesia on 8th April 2020.

At school, Kat excelled in her academics gaining 9 A/A* at IGCSE and was a natural sportswoman, having represented her school in athletics, basketball, football, tennis, badminton and swimming. She has also competed in sprints and long jump at the State of Wilayah Persekutuan Athletics meet. Her affinity with the ocean has Kat indulging in scuba diving and surfing the past few years.

Kat has been accepted to the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California to further her studies and hone her skills in singing and songwriting. She currently studies online whilst waiting for the campus to open following pandemic closure.

Kat has a wide variety of music taste but counts ‘The Chainsmokers’, ‘Chelsea Cutler’ and ‘Halsey’ amongst her recent favourites which have helped inspire her in her own songwriting.

Having travelled to over 20 countries, Kat draws on her experiences from both personal and of the people she has met along the way. Many hours spent on aeroplanes crisscrossing the world has given her plenty of time to reflect on those experiences and write lyrics to many a song. ‘You’ was one of those times.

Following the release of ‘YOU’, her second single ‘Lost Again’ was released on 18th August 2020 and ‘Last Summer’ was released on September 28th. Kat recently released a cover in Mandarin of Reflection from the Disney film, Mulan which was widely covered by over 200 news outlets in China.

Kat recently featured on the Met10 show on Hitz for the 2020 wrap up after being nominated Homegrown Artist of the Month for October 2020 by Hitz.

"Burn" is the first studio recorded song on Kat's debut EP entitled ‘My Demons’ due for release in mid-2021. It sees a journey back into country-pop territory by Kat from self-imposed isolation of the lockdowns in 2020 which gave space for visceral reflection.

The 5 tracks on the EP all tell a tale of the myriad of personal emotions and life experiences reflected upon during this time. From the haunting lyrics of ‘My Demons’ to the sweet fairy tale like emotions of ‘Lullaby’, this debut EP sets the rudder in a new course forward for this young singer-songwriter.

The bitter lyrics behind Burn3 are inspired by a relationship never destined to last resulting in anger and resentment causing fire and burning ‘in the room’. It has a memorable and catchy chorus married with cruelly effective verses and the gut-wrenching line ‘Suddenly you grew mad and distant / Blame and cursin' my name till the ends of existence’ stick in the mind long after the last note has rung out.
