homegrown aotm february 2020: lunadira

Lunadira has lamented the blandness of her suitors in the past (‘ur cute but boring’) but not all failed relationships are the fault of vanilla *** dudes, as evident in her latest single ‘Crazy Dizzy’. This time, the singer-songwriter eschews the jest of her previous single and takes a more self-reflective look at the vagaries of a tumultuous love affair.

“Curiosity killed the cat in many ways and ‘Crazy Dizzy’ takes you on a journey towards a doomed relationship, despite being warned from the start,” says Lunadira, describing one’s own complicity in enabling a toxic relationship.

“There’s a certain fascination towards self-destruction in the song,” she continues, “... like a moth to a flame.”

This self-awareness is displayed in Lunadira’s pained croonings. “And I knew, but I don’t wanna listen,” the song goes, “cause it feels so different.” It’s the perennial id vs. superego conflict -- desire and morality failing to mediate the realistic option of leaving a toxic partner. To borrow her own words, ‘Crazy Dizzy’ is “the internal conflict you have as you’re about to crash and burn [your romantic pursuit].”

Taking a page from the nu soul handbook as opposed to contemporary alt r’n’b, ‘Crazy Dizzy’ (produced by labelmate Reddi Rocket) is decidedly maturer in tone. Reddi’s production crackles like an old record and matches the ebb and flow of Lunadira’s breathy vocals, which mesmerises us as much as it, too, is under the mesmerism of another party. This is Lunadira at her most sensual.
