With all the reboots and remakes that have been making their way to us lately, it comes to no surprise that another one of our childhood favourites is about to get the same treatment!
This time, it’s Barney & Friends!

The iconic purple dinosaur from our imagination is set to head to the big screen in a movie by Mattel Films and Get Out actor, Daniel Kaluuya who will be producing the live-action movie.
While the upcoming movie does not have a studio attached to it, the Barney movie will be produced through Daniel’s newly formed 59% banner, along with Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow, as well as David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey for Valparaiso Pictures.

Running from 1992 to 2009, Barney has been a staple in many of our childhood homes where the imaginary and perpetually optimistic purple tyrannosaurus rex taught us lessons about manners, friendship and more through song and dance.
Now, Daniel is excited to bring Barney back to our screens!
“Barney was an ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” Daniel said. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” said Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”
David Carrico of Valparaiso Pictures added, “Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination, and we can’t wait to get ‘I love you, you love me’ stuck in heads everywhere, yet again.”
While nothing else is known about the movie just yet, except that it is happening; Barney will join other Mattel properties that are currently being developed as a feature, including Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe and Barbie.
