Year after year… Decade after decade (well, not decades but it feels like it no?) fans have anxiously waited for the next installment of Avatar since its first release back in 2009.

We’ve constantly heard news that a sequel was in the works, but we had no idea when it would reach the big screen.

Finally, we’ve gotten more updates for the next long-awaited James Cameron film during Disney’s presentation of the movie’s 3D trailer, and revealed the movie’s official title at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

The sequel has officially been given a title and is now known as Avatar: The Way of Water, and will be released in theatres on December 14 2022.

Just as a refresher… This is only the first out of four sequels planned for Avatar.

Producer Jon Landau shared that each story will be a stand-alone and each will come to its conclusion.

“The will be a fulfilling resolution to each film, but when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four will create a larger epic saga,” he said.

As of now, we are unable to watch the trailer online but it will roll out exclusively in cinemas with Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next week starting May 4th. The trailer will then go online a week later.

So what do we know about the trailer for now?

As promised by James Cameron, Avatar: The Way Of Water will take place in and around the ocean where Sully and Neytiri have started their family.

According to Deadline, the sequel looks even more jaw-dropping in its deep-blue visuals than the 2009 film which already blew our minds during its release. The alien people are split, battling against each other in a guns versus arrows fight. It’s truly a whole new world which will up the stakes of the previous three-time Oscar-winning 2009 original.

It was also revealed that Disney will rerelease the original Avatar on September 23,  around the globe with remastered audio and sound.

As of now, Avatar is still the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide at $2.8 billion (RM12.2 billion) after regaining the title by overtaking Avengers: Endgame during the pandemic.
