Autobots, roll out the new Bumblebee trailer.

Despite good office box collections, the Transformers franchise has suffered from terrible reviews over the years. But the new prequel, sans Michael Bay, is set to be its best entry yet!

Set 20 years before the events of 2007's Transformers, Hailee Steinfeld stars in the sci-fi film and sees her befriending Bumblebee in the latest trailer. Directed by Travis Knight, the film is due for release in December.

The film is set in a small town in California in 1987 and sees Hailee's character, Charlie Watson, finding out that the VW Beetle she bought on her birthday is secretly a robot! While the two form an unlikely friendship, they team up when they find out that the Decepticons are coming back for an item that the Autobots stole.

A clear difference can be seen in director, Travis’ bot designs. Bumblebee and the rest of the Transformers feature the original, first gen, chunky design of the toys.

"For me that was the touchstone. That was when I was first exposed to the Transformer. I loved those characters, I loved their designs and I introduced my kids to Transformers and the first thing I showed them was the Transformers cartoon and they loved it as much as I did. Part of it is the beauty and simplicity of the design, so when we were trying to bring a new perspective to this franchise we went back to the beginning and asked how we can bring that to a modern era but still pay tribute to the wonder and magic of those original designs," Travis said.

Fans are actually excited for the prequel and many have taken to Twitter to share their surprise.

Are you more excited to catch Bumblebee or the G1 Transformers?
