It’s safe to say that almost everyone has seen Avengers: Endgame. The superhero movie has become the number one movie of the year, but it unfortunately has not met its target of beating the number one movie ever.
Over the weekend, in a bid to beat Avatar’s box office record as the top-grossing film ever, Disney rereleased Endgame with new footage to entice fans to support the movie.
The rerelease, which was meant to tie in with the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, however, fell short of accomplishing its goal of taking over Avatar’s crown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s looking highly unlikely that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest movie yet; will be taking the top spot as the rerelease only made $7.8 million (RM32.3 million) over the weekend.
The amount is compromised of $5.5 million (RM22.8 million) made domestically and $2.3 million (RM9.5 million) overseas. This brings Endgame’s total to $2.76 billion (RM11.4 billion) in global box office gross.
While in cinemas, Avatar collected $2.78 billion (RM11.5 billion); which puts Endgame shy of around $27 million (RM111.8 million) below the number one spot.
In the battle of numbers, it seems like Endgame has unfortunately finished second and not managed to reach their goal of beating out Avatar who has held the record since 2009. But there’s still something to be said about being the second highest grossing movie, right?
Were you one of the many who tried to help Endgame reach its goal? We know we were!
