According to director Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon 3 will mark the end of the road for the massively successful franchise.
Dean and veteran animation producer Brad Lewis are preparing fans for emotions to run very high in the last film. At the Toronto Film Festival, the director stated that the third instalment will be the final film in the series and says that the conclusion will explain why.

"We thought about it for a long time and came up with what we think is a bittersweet way to say goodbye to these characters, but the right way. You will understand why Hiccup says, as you heard in the trailer, 'There were dragons when I was a boy," and by the end of this film, you'll have answered the question of what could have happened to them."

Hiccup is going to have to learn to live and battle without his beloved Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon 3. Dean says that the theme of the film is "letting go, or finding the wisdom to let go, rather." This makes it seem like some pretty dark and sad things will go down in the final movie of the franchise. It looks like the third film is looking to put an end to everything that the previous instalment set up, while creating a new world.
Are you sad that the franchise is ending?
