After years of speculation, it looks like Disney is finally moving ahead with a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot!
But this time, instead of the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow, the studio is reportedly in search of a female lead and they’ve already got their eye on someone...

According to insider Daniel Richtman, Disney will be moving forward with an alternative reboot style and they’ve currently got their eye on Jumanji and Marvel Cinematic Universe star, Karen Gillan.
Disinsider reported that Karen’s name was first thrown around last year but unfortunately, we do not know if any formal discussions have taken place just yet but the “studio is definitely interested.”

However, the insiders have also reported that the studio may be on the hunt for a woman of colour to take on the lead role though details of that role and character remains unknown.
“There could be a possibility that the film will look to be centered on Redd, the popular female pirate featured in the Disney Parks attraction and is a meet-and-greet character,” Disinsider writes.

Previously in October, Disney is said to have tapped Chernobyl creator Craig Amazon and writer of the previous Pirates films, Ted Elliot, to find a “fresh new direction” for the franchise.
No director has been confirmed for the reboot but “Disney has several names they’ve looked at.”

As we all know, a key part of Pirates has always been Johnny Depp brilliant performance as Captain Jack Sparrow but the actor’s involvement in the reboot has yet to be addressed.
“This is indeed a reboot, so it is unlikely he returns,” Disinsider reported.
Back in 2018, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey avoided the question of Johnny’s involvement when asked about the reboot by The Hollywood Reporter.
“We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants,” Sean said. “And that’s what I’ve tasked them with.”

Hmm... We’re not sure what a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot would be like without Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in its universe but it’ll definitely be interesting to see.
