Earlier this year, it was reported that Marvel Studios and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had parted ways over “creative differences” while in development of the sequel.
A month or so after that sad news, rumours made its way around that Sam Raimi – who helmed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey McGuire; was in talks to take on the highly anticipated sequel.
And now, the rumours have been confirmed by Sam himself!

On a recently conference call with the media, the director was asked about the scene in Spider-Man 2 where Doctor Strange’s name is dropped.
Sam responded by showing his love for the superhero and went on to off-handedly confirm his work on the Doctor Strange sequel.
“I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters,” the director said. “He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”

Doctor Strange’s director had nothing but high praise for Sam when news first broke that he wold be replacing Scott as the director of the sequel.
"I’ve worked with Sam Raimi. One of the nicest people I’ve known in the film business, and as a director, a true living legend. What a great choice to take over Doctor Strange," he tweeted.
With the world currently staying home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production on the sequel – that was set to begin in a few weeks; has been postponed and the movie that was supposed to hit theaters on May 2021, will now see a November 2021 release instead.
We can’t wait to see Sam Raimi’s take on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!
