It’s been a while since a Hollywood movie production has made its to our shores but that’s about to change with the upcoming Rajah.
A periodical film, Rajah will document and tell the tale of Sarawak’s first ever Rajah, Sir James Brooke.

The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Jonathan Rhys Meyers had been casted as the legendary British explorer and that filming of the movie will be taking place in Sarawak.
To make things more Malaysian, the actor will also be reportedly learning to converse in Malay, Dayak and Arabic for some parts of the movie as the real James Brooke was “a linguist who immersed himself in the region’s culture.”
What’s more attractive about the upcoming Rajah is that some of our very own Malaysian actors will also be a part of the leading cast, Star2 reports.
Shaheizy Sam, Bront Palarae, Rahim Razali, Peter John, Kahar Jimi and Atiquah Hasiholan have reportedly signed on to join Jonathan in the periodic film.
Bront is set take on the role of James Brooke’s principal rival for power, Pengiran Indera Mahkota; while Shaheizy will reportedly play Subu – James’ lifetime Malay companion. Rahim meanwhile will play the Sultan of Brunei.

Joining the cast as well in vital roles are Hong Kong actress Josie Ho and The Lord of the Ring’s Dominic Monaghan.
To ensure authenticity, Rajah will be using James’ diaries, letters, first-hand historical accounts and archives of The Brooke Heritage Trust as references.
The Sarawak Tourism Board and the federal FIMI film rebate of Malaysia will be supporting the production of Rajah.
Filming is said to have begun in Sarawak and will continue until the end of October!
