Pikachu has always communicated with Ash Ketchum, his beloved trainer, by saying his own name repeatedly in different intonations. And Ash has ALWAYS understood Pikachu. There has never been a moment of misunderstanding between them.
So, when Pikachu suddenly spoke English in a particularly emotional scene during the premiere screening for Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! last week, the crowd freaked out.
Watch it go down in the (most probably illegally filmed) video below:
According to The Guardian, who spoke to Kate Bristol, the English voice actor for Pikachu, the scene where Pikachu was speaking to Ash in English could have been part of a “dream sequence in Ash’s mind”.
“I know a lot of people might think it’s out of the ordinary for Pikachu to speak English. It’s definitely out of the ordinary,” Kate told The Guardian. “It was hilarious being in the theatre with the rest of the cast and hearing the audience’s reaction as a huge collective ‘What?’ rose up.”
And for a bit of trivia, she revealed that she attempted to mimic Ikue Otani, the Japanese voice actor for Pikachu, in this infamous performance.
